Philatelic Bureau
The Philatelic Bureau
The Philatelic Bureau was built in 1900 by Warwick Major, who originally used the building to screen the region's first movies. In 1915, after the screenings ceased, he sold the building to the Postal and Telegraph Department.
The bureau is housed in an imposing colonial building, which was once South India's first electric cinema theatre, set amid a vast open space in a prime location.
On September 26, 2024, students from the University of Madras, Chepauk campus, visited the Philatelic Bureau on Anna Road, Chennai. The visit was coordinated by Dr. Jaisakthivel, Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism and Communication, University of Madras. During the visit, each student wrote and posted their own postcards to various destinations.
